In 2009, Pastor Stephen Hamidu and Joseph Marah connected with Sportspersons Ministries International while they were studying in the United States. Understanding the concept of relational evangelism, they quickly understood the goal of connecting with the unchurched by sharing things that they enjoy doing; but intentionally bringing God into the mix.
Working with SMI, they have been encouraged to lead this type of ministry at their homes. Dreams began of outdoor ministries in Sierra Leone and Nigeria. People there are extremely passionate about one thing: Soccer and thus began Sportspersons Ministries International Soccer Ministry!
After returning home, Joseph met with churches in Kabala, Sierra Leone, discussing the hopes of starting a soccer ministry.
Four churches agreed to be involved in a weekend soccer tournament. They churches all agreed to have a mixture of church members/believers and non members/non-believers on their teams. They would work on being intentional about building relationships before, during and after the games.
Joseph rented uniforms, a PA system, and bought trophies.
Many family members and neighborhood people watched the tournament.
A short devotional was shared at half time. And prayer was included at the event.
After the tournament, the rest of the churches in Kabala have decided to participate.
Just as Joseph is doing in Sierra Leone, Pastor Stephen is bringing the ministry to Nigeria. Pastor Stephen has since talked to his brother who is a pastor in Nigeria and his brother has now started a soccer ministry in his church. In December, Stephen completed his studies and returned to take a new position of ministry in Nigeria. He will work to expand the soccer ministry there. Stephen's friend David Frachano is studying at Calvin Seminary now and also hopes to carry the vision of the soccer ministry when he returns home to Nigeria.
